Wellpoints and boreholes. Milnerton, Cape Town.
Sunningdale, West Coast
Coastal sand over Malmesbury shale with a shallow water table. A wellpoint is the normal first option. Boreholes go deeper where the sand thins out. In Sunningdale, wellpoints typically 6 to 12 m, boreholes typically 25 to 60 m.

The price, the permit, the dry hole. Asked every week, answered here.
You must register a borehole or wellpoint with the City of Cape Town. It is a form, not an approval, and we send you the link. Drilling for domestic garden use does not need a water use licence.
Sandy suburbs with a shallow water table take wellpoints. Shale and granite do not. The suburb pages on this site say which is which, and we confirm on the phone before we quote.
Depth, ground, casing, the pump you need and how far the water has to go. A wellpoint is a fixed-price job in most sand. A borehole is priced per metre drilled plus casing and the pump.
Not without a test. Most Cape Town groundwater is fine for the garden and the toilet cisterns. We can arrange a lab test if you want it for the house.
We tell you before we start what the chance of a dry hole is for your ground, and the quote says what you pay in that case. No surprises after the fact.
